The Slave Ship wins honors
Marcus Rediker's latest book, The Slave Ship: A Human History, was awarded the 2008 George Washington Book Prize for the most important new book about America's founding era, the 2008 James A. Rawley Prize in Atlantic History by the American Historical Association, and the 2008 Merle Curti Award by the Organization of American Historians for the best book in American social, cultural, or intellectual history.
Seymour Drescher caps busy summer lecture tour by publishing Abolition: A History of Slavery and Antislavery
Professor Seymour Drescher, Distinguished University Professor of History and Sociology, spent much of the summer lecturing and participating in conferences at Leiden University in the Netherlands, Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, and the annual meeting of Academia Europaea. His new book Abolition: A History of Slavery and Antislavery just appeared in print from Cambridge University Press.
Patrick Manning's new book The African Diaspora to be subject of Department symposium
Patrick Manning, Andrew Mellon Professor of World History and Director of the World History Center, just published The African Diaspora: A History through Culture. The book will be subject of a symposium on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 from 3:30 to 5:30 in the History Department Lounge, 3703 Posvar Hall.
