Initiatives

The History Department enhances education and research through presentation of initiatives.

The American Left Ephemera Collection represents one such effort working with Associate Professor Richard Oestreicher from the History department. This collection, which consists of a wide-range of primary source material documenting left-wing organizations in the twentieth century in the U.S., has now been donated to the Archives Service Center for research use.

Recent Dissertations in United States History. This list of recent doctoral dissertations, with world coverage, is updated every two months by Jonathon Erlen, who runs the history of medicine programming for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and is an adjunct Assistant Professor in our History Department. The list is compiled manually by Dr. Erlen from the published volumes of Dissertation Abstracts. He uses a very broad definition of United States history, with the majority of titles coming from academic disciplines other than traditional history departments. Thus dissertations completed in numerous departments, from architecture to women’s studies, may be included in this list. Readers whose institutions purchase the ProQuest database from Ann Arbor, MI can download almost all of these titles for free. Others must purchase individual titles directly from ProQest. Please send all questions about this dissertation list to Dr. Erlen at erlen@pitt.edu.
