Empires have played a formative role in history. They have driven conquest and exploitation while also facilitating the circulation of people, goods, and ideas throughout the world. With experts in a great variety of empires—maritime and terrestrial, ancient and modern, European and non-European—the Pitt History Department is a privileged place for the study of empire from a comparative and global perspective. Initiatives within this cluster include The Working Group on Trans/Anti-Imperialism.
