Department of History

Islam in World History

From North Africa to Central and Southeast Asia to Europe, societies across the globe have been shaped by Islam in vital ways.  With several new hires and in collaboration with faculty from across the university, the History Department is engaging in a new initiative to explore these societies from a trans-regional and world-historical perspective.

We approach the interconnected world history of societies shaped by Islam not only as the study of religion and religious experience, but also the investigation of diverse historical phenomena within regions, nations, and transnational systems. In collaboration with faculty in other departments, Pitt historians conduct research on state formation, colonialism, the rise of print media, and transregional networks in the Islamic world.
