"Nothing to Lose but Your Chains: Convict Resistance in Colonial Australia 1788-1860"
Event Description
Hamish Maxwell-Stewart is a professor of heritage studies and digital humanities at the University of New England, Australia. He is the author (with Michael Quinlan) of Unfree Workers: Insubordination and Convict Resistance in Convict Australia (Palgrave Studies in Economic History, 2022). Over the last fifteen years he has worked with family historians, archivists, trade unions and academics to assemble Australia’s largest historical dataset. Analysis of this digital archive has revealed the scale of Australia’s first industrial relations crisis and the many links which tie convict labour to other forms of exploitation and resistance.
