The Dr. Larry E. Davis Black Excellence in the Academy Awards, which honor the outstanding achievements, contributions and leadership of Black faculty at the University of Pittsburgh, have been announced for 2024.
The awardees will be honored at a dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 7 at Heinz History Center. Register to attend through the Office of the Provost’s Faculty Diversity and Development website.
The awards are named in honor of Davis, who served as dean of Pitt’s School of Social Work from 2001-2018.
The awards and winners are:
Academic Icon Award: Larry Glasco, associate professor, Department of History, Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences
Academic Excellence Award: Dara Mendez, associate director of the Center for Health Equity, and associate professor of epidemiology, School of Public Health
Emerging Scholar Award: Ron Idoko, associate director of the Center on Race and Social Problems, founding director of the Racial Equity Consciousness Institute, and research assistant professor, School of Social Work
Excellence in Leadership Award: D. Kojo Hamilton, director, UPMC Neurosurgical Spine Services; co-director, Spine Fellowship Program; and professor of neurological surgery, School of Medicine
Excellence in Mentorship Award: Martina Anto-Ocrah, assistant professor of medicine, School of Medicine
Excellence in Community Engaged Scholarship Award: Leonora Anyango, teaching professor, Department of English, Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences
Excellence in Community Engaged Scholarship Award: Tony Gaskew, associate dean of academic affairs and professor of criminal justice, Pitt–Bradford
