“Usually when we talk about slavery, my students are really blown away that there was slavery in the Pittsburgh area. Students would say, ‘I’ve never heard of this. I thought slavery was down south. We never were taught that,’” explains Professor Larry Glasco.

Eleanora Kaloyeropoulou, a history major, received the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Senior of the Year Award. This award annually recognizes a senior student for meritorious leadership and extracurricular activities who exhibits exemplary character, responsible leadership and service in campus or community life, scholarship, and genuine fellowship.
William Stanton Prize Awarded by Pitt Department of History
Graduating History honors major Halak Mehta has been selected by the History Department of the University of Pittsburgh as the recipient of the William Stanton Prize for the best honors thesis in History written in the 2015-2016 academic year.
George Reid Andrews receives the Provost's Award for Excellence in Mentoring
George Reid Andrews, Distinguished Professor of History in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and the University Center for International Studies Research Professor of History received the Provost's Award for Excellence in Mentoring. Andrews joined Pitt in 1981 as an assistant professor and has chaired the Department of History during several periods, including most recently from 2010-14.
