Mariam Pandam Alhassan

My research focuses on Africa, with specializations in public health and environmental history during colonial rule in Ghana between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Before joining Pitt, I completed my BA in History and Sociology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana (2021), followed by an MA in History at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. My MA thesis explores the lives and work of African sanitary inspectors during the colonial rule in Ghana. The thesis examines figures whose contributions to public health and sanitation have long been neglected in historical studies. By examining the roles of local actors within colonial governance and everyday urban life, I aim to shed light on how they shaped the infrastructure and ideology of social medicine in Ghana.
