The Chinese Factory Project

The Chinese Factory Project (CFP) is a digital and public history initiative. It currently consists of two parts: 1) the digitization of the 30,000-page Baojin Company Archive (1907-2004), the most complete business archive of a modern Chinese industrial enterprise; 2) the Factory Gazetteer Database, a large-scale geospatial database drawing on 7,000-volume Chinese enterprise gazetteers published in the 1980s and 1990s. With a micro-level digital archive and a macro-level database, the CFP aims to create new visualizations of and datasets on the changing landscape of China’s industrial economy from the ground up.
