Teaching World History

This course provides training for teaching world history surveys. It is also a required component of the Credential in Teaching World History offered by the History Department. Over the course of the semester, students will engage with the content of an existing world history survey (the instructor’s own) and learn about available resources for the teaching of world history. Along the way, they will familiarize themselves with many of the major textbooks and online resources in the field while also debating the merits of assigning supplementary monographs and/or essay collections at the introductory survey level. As a final project, students will design their own world history survey syllabus, based on their understanding of the field, distinct approaches within it, and their own pedagogical and subject-area strengths and preferences. Throughout the semester, the Department’s world history teaching faculty will guest lecture and provide examples of how they approach the teaching of certain classic world historical moments (such as the development of agriculture, Mongol invasions, the Black Death, the Columbian encounter etc.,all of which appear in standard World History survey courses) so that students are exposed to a variety of perspectives on how to approach the survey.
