HIST 2515: Democracy, Authoritarianism, and Human Rights in Modern Latin America

This graduate seminar will explore the politics and culture of democracy, authoritarianism, human rights, and memory in modern Latin America. Focusing on a variety of countries, it will consider such topics as the experience of diverse sectors of society under democratic and authoritarian rule; movements for human rights; efforts to forge truth, justice, and reparations in the aftermath of authoritarianism; and struggles over competing ideals of democracy in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
