Rachel Gately

Date of Degree: Bachelor of Arts in History and Hispanic Languages and Literatures (Portuguese minor and Latin American Studies certificate), 2013
Current Position: Dual-language teacher, Worcester Public Schools, Massachusetts

My studies in History at Pitt dovetailed perfectly with my passion for the languages and cultures of Latin America, affording me the opportunity to study abroad in both Cuba and Brazil during my undergraduate career and in turn helping me to improve my Spanish and Portuguese abilities.

Upon graduation, I accepted an offer to join Teach For America and became a English/Spanish dual language instructor in Dallas, Texas. The skills I acquired while pursuing my history degree, including critical thinking, the ability to synthesize information, and fluency in Spanish have been invaluable in my teaching career.

In 2016 I made the decision to move closer to home and am currently a dual language teacher in Worcester, Mass., working with fifth and sixth grade students from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and several other Central and Latin American countries.
